Los Angeles is a very recent city with extremely rapid growth and development. For a century, Southern California has been a “magnet” for countless population movements, whether for the rest of the United States or the rest of the world. The wave of immigration in Southern California, especially in Los Angeles and its metropolitan area, has significantly increased the population where 2 million people settling there every 10 years for a century. Thus, this phenomenon has generated enormous urban development, making the city of Los Angeles one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world.
The city of Los Angeles is centered on a territory where the first colonies were established, a territory called “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciúncula”, founded by Spanish settlers in the late 1700s and which will remain, for a century, a very modest village. Now, Los Angeles and its metropolitan area extend more than a hundred kilometers in all directions, which shows a gigantic urban expanse. Los Angeles, alone, has 4,054,400 inhabitants and its agglomeration has 18,788,800 inhabitants and spans in 5 Californian counties, making the city and its metropolitan area the first most populated of California and the second most populated of the United States of America behind New York City and its metropolitan area.
